A day from Barcelona: Escaladei and Siurana
It is a long but simple day: about two hours by car from Barcelona to Escaladei, a day spent beside the Montsant range, and the drive back in the evening. The morning is for the places that explain where the Priorat comes from: the Charterhouse, which gave the region its name, and the winery that lives next to it.
The order is deliberate. The Charterhouse closes earlier than the other stops and only opens until mid-afternoon on Sundays, so it comes first; lunch is in the same hamlet, with no need to get back in the car, and the afternoon is for Siurana, which looks best in low light and doesn’t ask for hurry.
Two things are worth booking before you leave: the tasting at the winery and lunch. The restaurant only serves lunch and the winery works by arranged visits.

The Charterhouse closes at 17:30 from October to April and at 19:00 from May to September; on Sundays and public holidays it only opens until 15:00, so start the day there.
